Your Pathway into Animal Physiotherapy at MAP

At Melbourne Animal Physiotherapy (MAP), we understand that many physiotherapists feel drawn to working with animals — but aren’t always sure where to start, or how to bridge the gap from human to animal practice.

That’s exactly why we’ve developed a clear, supportive, and practical training pathway.

Whether you’re newly graduated or an experienced physiotherapist looking for a career shift, our goal is to help you build real confidence, clinical reasoning, and hands-on skills in animal physiotherapy.

Why Transition into Animal Physiotherapy?

Animal physiotherapy is a rapidly growing field, with increasing demand from veterinary professionals and pet owners alike.

Just like in human physiotherapy, the focus is on:
• Movement and function
• Pain management
• Rehabilitation following injury or surgery
• Strength, conditioning, and return to activity

At MAP, we work closely with veterinarians and surgeons to deliver high-level, collaborative care — and we’re always looking for passionate physiotherapists to join this space.

The MAP Training Pathway

We don’t expect you to come in knowing everything about animals — that’s what we’re here for.

Our pathway is designed to be structured, progressive, and highly practical.

1. Shadowing & Observation

Your journey begins by spending time in the clinic with our team.

This is your opportunity to:
• Observe real consults and rehabilitation sessions
• Understand how assessments differ from human physiotherapy
• Learn how we communicate with clients and veterinary teams
• Get a feel for the MAP environment and team culture

Shadowing is low-pressure, highly supportive, and a great way to explore whether this pathway is right for you.

2. Foundational Courses

We offer in-person, small group courses designed specifically for physiotherapists entering the animal space.

These include:
• Hydrotherapy Training
• Canine Remedial Massage

What makes these courses different:
• Hands-on, in-person learning
• Real patients — not simulations
• Direct guidance from experienced clinicians
• Immediate feedback to build confidence quickly

These courses provide the practical foundation you need to begin working with animals safely and effectively.

3. Structured Mentoring & Clinical Integration

For the right candidates, we offer ongoing mentoring and structured clinical exposure.

This stage focuses on:
• Developing your assessment and clinical reasoning skills
• Learning species-specific handling and communication
• Progressing from observation to active participation
• Building confidence in treatment planning

You’ll be supported by a team of experienced physiotherapists who guide you every step of the way.

4. Real Clinical Experience

As your skills develop, you’ll begin to take a more active role in patient care.

This may include:
• Assisting with hydrotherapy sessions
• Supporting rehabilitation programs
• Contributing to treatment planning
• Gradually increasing hands-on involvement

Our goal is to ensure you feel confident, competent, and supported before progressing further.

5. Long-Term Career Development

For those who continue along the pathway, there are opportunities to grow within MAP.

This may include:
• Ongoing mentoring and professional development
• Working within our physiotherapy and hydrotherapy teams
• Building caseloads and clinical independence
• Developing areas of special interest within animal rehabilitation

We are passionate about building a team of highly skilled animal physiotherapists — and investing in their long-term success.

What We Look For

We’re not just looking for experience — we’re looking for the right mindset.

The physiotherapists who thrive in this space are:
• Curious and eager to learn
• Compassionate and patient
• Open to feedback and mentorship
• Passionate about animal health and wellbeing

You don’t need prior animal experience — just a willingness to learn and engage.

Why MAP?

At MAP, we’ve been delivering animal physiotherapy services since 2007, and have built a strong reputation within the veterinary community.

Our clinics offer:
• A calm, purpose-built rehabilitation environment
• State-of-the-art equipment, including HydroPhysio underwater treadmills
• A highly collaborative and supportive team culture
• Strong relationships with referring veterinarians and surgeons

Most importantly, we provide a pathway — not just a job.
