Dry needling is a general term for advancement of sterile needles into myofascial trigger points. Also known as Western acupuncture. Trigger point dry needling aims to reduce your dog’s myofascial pain caused by myofascial trigger points and the resulting muscle spasm and dysfunction.
Dry needling involves inserting sterile needles into the trigger point (or knotted muscle), thereby reducing pain and restoring regular length and function of the muscle. It is an effective treatment for both acute and chronic pain, arthritis, injury prevention and rehabilitation, with very little side effect.
What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
- Dry needling is based upon muscular dysfunction.
- Dry needling relies upon physical assessment to guide treatment.
- Acupuncture is based on eastern medical diagnosis, requiring training in Chinese medicine.
