Medical Taping for dogs – What is it and how can it help your pet?

You may have seen your favourite sports person running around with bright coloured taping around a joint. Did you know the tape itself does more than just support and you can get this for your pet?

Kinesiology is the study of movement, kinesiology taping utilises this study and combines it with the support of sports tape. We apply a special kind of tape to fur or skin which acts to lift the skin providing immediate reduction in pressure and aids in pain relief. This will complement some of the treatments done by your animal physiotherapist in their sessions.

There are many different things we can use Kinesiology taping for some of which are as follows:

  • Pain Relief
  • Reduce inflammation/swelling or bruising
  • Encourage circulation & lymphatic flow
  • Support for joints without restriction
  • Increase proprioception

The goal or target will determine the kind of taping done by the therapist and the best part is it is using the body’s own natural healing process.

When can I use this for my pet?

  • Post surgical swelling or bruising
  • Joint support
  • Posture support
  • Fascia or muscle tension
  • Tendonopathies, muscle contractions & hypertonia
  • Proprioceptive deficits
  • Wounds & Scarring

Ask your physiotherapist about kinesiology tape at your next visit.
